Spyhunter 3 - level blockout

This is the preproduction 'blockout' of a villian mountain base from Spyhunter III: Nowhere to Run. Doing rough versions of game levels is now fairly common, although at the time this game was made it was a lot less common. I think this level had the most interesing layout of all the Spyhunter levels. It's a villian base set in a mountain. There is a nice combination of outdoor areas and indoor areas, with cool new stuff to see around every corner. Many artists would think working on this stuff is boring, since it doesn't involve making fancy individual art assets, but I really enjoy doing this sort of thing. It has a big effect on how the final level looks and feels in the game, and having someone with good artistic sensibilities contribute to a level's layout can really make a difference. The art director, game designer and I meshed really well on this level, and the results were quite nice.
blockout

The level starts in a peacefull little valley along the side of the mountain. The player makes their way up along a stream, and soon comes across bad guys with guns, and the outskirts of the base.

Outdoor areas lead to bunker-type areas underground...
villian base

Near the end of the level the player comes across a huge underground chamber with Big Ole Friggin Huge Missiles in it. Nice.
